Archive / 2009 / MAYSounds Like Zeus
Arts & Crafts is set to release music from its newest signing, Zeus, available June 2. The band's debut EP Sounds Like Zeus demonstrates an innate sense of melody and includes a raucous cover of Genesis' classic, "That's All" which, as the title of the EP would aptly suggest, sounds like Zeus. The band has kept a busy schedule with a month-long residency at Toronto’s Dakota Tavern (stay tuned for further announcements about another upcoming Dakota residency this summer!) and recent Ontario dates supporting a wide variety of artists, such as Ladyhawk, Hey Rosetta!, Attack in Black and labelmate Gentleman Reg. You can download the track “Marching Through Your Head” here and listen below.
Jason Collett U.S. West Coast Tour Jason Collett will join the Weakerthans for a West Coast swing of US cities, starting in Seattle on July 18 and finishing up in Portland July 25. Jason will be performing solo, previewing songs from his upcoming album and mixing in favourites from his catalogue. For full details on these dates click here.
Gonzales Breaks World Record
Pianist and showman Gonzales has broken the Guinness World Record for "longest concert by an individual", playing over 200 songs in 27 hours and 3 minutes. Guinness adjudicator Frank Chambers, was on hand at the sold-out Cine 13 Theatre in Paris, France to present the official certificate. An exhausted Gonzales summed it up before some much-needed rest: "I always wanted to be a musical super-hero. I think I'm one small step closer today." You can watch the full concert at UStream. Congratulations Gonzo from Arts & Crafts.

I tried to get it on the day it was released, but stupid HMV hadn't received it. Probably should have pre-ordered it through the A&C Store.
Broken Social Scene to play a free show in Toronto
We've been informed that Olympic Island 2009, featuring performances by two A&C artists, Broken Social Scene and Apostle Of Hustle, has been cancelled. Refunds are available at point of purchase. Undeterred in their wish to perform in Toronto this summer, Broken Social Scene will now play a free concert at Harbourfront Centre on July 11. The Rattlesnake Choir will support them. A complete list of updated Apostle Of Hustle tour dates can be found here.

You've got to be kidding me
2009-05-13 @ 15:11 by Adam
That really sucks. Also, WTF?? Harbourfront Centre?? That place was way too small for even Crystal Castles last year, BSS is going to be a giant clusterfuck.
2009-05-13 @ 15:45 by Michael F
I gotta say, it's going to be pretty packed....
2009-05-13 @ 16:04 by Gord
What a drag to hear, but yay free show! I remember how awesome that bss show years ago at harbourfront was
2009-05-13 @ 19:14 by eric
yeah dude is right about harbour front centre not being big enough.
sucks that it's not on the islands.
2009-05-14 @ 00:01 by Alex
Thanks BSS, just what I want a free show at Harbor Front. I don't have all day to stand around and wait just to hear something. The Island show was gonna be kick ass. Whatever happened to us? Play for us guys! Get over yourselves.
2009-05-14 @ 00:26 by ...
^^^Pathetic.
Kudos on a free makeup gig. Was psyched for Explosions but this will be a blast. Let's just make sure H-Front cranks the volume, cause crowd will be way past the cheap seats...!
2009-05-14 @ 01:31 by chris
WHYYYY??!!! this really sucks, seeing bss on the island 2 years ago was the best show i've seen to date. although harbourfront will be cramped, it's pretty great of them to still put on a show for us in toronto on that day, a free show!
2009-05-14 @ 04:06 by Thomas (http://www.myspace.com/thomasvictorio)
what the buck, man? i was looking forward to it!
2009-05-14 @ 12:55 by ...
Why not put a couple up and coming Arts & Crafts guys on the bill and let the show go on... I mean Explosions and Beach House can hold their own... BSS is cool, but lets face it without Mr. Whiteman it's blah.
2009-05-14 @ 14:38 by jessica
whoever said that it's BSS's fault the show was cancelled.... it was probably because of some other reason beyond their control..that would explain why they are still playing a show.
2009-05-14 @ 17:01 by Sarah
I really don't understand why people are hating on BSS for this...obviously it sucks that the show's cancelled but you have to appreciate that not only are they playing a make up show on the same date, but they are playing it for FREE! Who doesn't love free shit?
2009-05-14 @ 17:54 by Michael F
Definitely not the fault of BSS. They wouldn't be playing a free show if it was. They are awesome to their fans. TY BSS.
2009-05-15 @ 04:19 by greg Kiefer
come to dallas please.. been waiting to hear the reschedule date since january... its May now...
2009-05-15 @ 11:44 by RC
It's BSS@harbourfront, in the middle of summer right on the damn lake & christ people the show is FREE. No waiting for ferry etc. have some drinks, shake your feet & have a good time
2009-05-17 @ 02:32 by stephay
according to kevin drew, among many other reasons, it was cancelled because the show would have been competing with the loud craziness that is the molson indy races. "The audience would have to put up with the sounds of racecars the whole day, a rumored ferry workers strike, not to mention all the fucking traffic while some of our main streets by the lake are shutdown." Sure it sucks, but if you ask me, it probably works out better this way.
2009-05-26 @ 14:07 by Ross
Seriously people... Use the money that you and your friends spent on the ticket to buy drinks and a hotel room for the night. What more can you ask for? I'm sure Explosions will be back to Toronto.

A&C announce Timber Timbre signing and distribution partnership with Out Of This Spark
Arts & Crafts announces the signing of Timber Timbre (a.k.a. Taylor Kirk) to a worldwide recording, management and publishing deal. Arts & Crafts will reissue Timber Timbre’s self-titled full-length album in Canada on June 30, 2009. Originally released in January through upstart Toronto label Out Of This Spark, the album is now available digitally at GalleryAC and will be released internationally via Arts & Crafts on July 28, 2009.
In addition, Arts & Crafts announces a distribution partnership with Out Of This Spark, a grassroots music label that was founded on similar principles as Arts & Crafts, to support and promote independent music in their community, releasing exciting and innovative music with the idea that everyone benefits from a healthy local arts scene.
"Bry Webb from the Cons turned me onto the Timber Timbre record and I immediately fell in love with it," says Arts & Crafts President, Jeffrey Remedios. "I went to acquaint Kevin Drew and he simultaneously tried to tell me. We both knew we had to try and tell the world about Timber Timbre and we're honoured he's giving us a chance to do just that." He continues, "Out Of This Spark has been doing great things for the Toronto music community and we're excited to be working more closely with them."
You can download the track ‘Lay Down In The Tall Grass’ from the self-titled album here. As well, check out the video for the song ‘We’ll Find Out’ here.
Toronto songwriter Timber Timbre is an other worldly soul, creating stirring, haunting songs that evoke imagery both dark and stunning and has earned a reputation as a spellbinding and dynamic performer. Timber Timbre documents a rapid progression from dusty, lo-fi bedroom blues to the more sophisticated, cinematic studio work that still possess the grainy, rustic feel epitomized as a sound all his own. Timber Timbre recorded the self-titled album at his home studio, putting the finishing touches on the record at the Lincoln County Social Club with producer Chris Stringer (Ohbijou, The Coast, Rush).
“Timber Timbre makes trippy, cinematic acoustic music, delivering it with a puzzling smile and an unsettling serenity.” – Globe & Mail
“Refreshingly restrained and understated, but equally confident and arresting.” – NOW Magazine

Gonzales Attempts World Record
Beginning at 11:30 PM on Saturday May 16 and through Sunday until the wee hours of the Monday morning, Gonzales will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for longest concert by an individual: 27 hours. The previous record is 26 hours and 12 minutes (performed by Prasanna Gudi in India).
Pianist, showman and producer (Feist, Jane Birkin, Charles Aznavour), Gonzales explains his motivation: " I will do this to push my musical and physical stamina. I believe music is part art, part athletics and this 27-hour concert will demonstrate both aspects." The repertoire will include some 300-odd recognizable songs from all eras and styles of music, in new and surprising arrangements, including Gonzales' catalogue. There will be no repetition of material during the attempt. As Gonzales himself says "I will break the record without sounding like a broken record".
The concert will take place at the Cine 13 Theatre in Paris, FR. For those not in attendance, you can stream the concert online in its entirety at: gonzpiration.com
